How to deal with stretch marks in young mothers and adoloscents

Stretch marks are a reason for visits to a dermatologist’s clinic.
Either a new mother or an expectant mother worried about what’s in store after birth, or a teenager with a new set of issues to deal with.

These marks are a part and parcel of the way our skin behaves under various conditions of growth and stress that include:

1) growth spurts in adolescents
2) pregnancy
3) sudden weight gain and loss
4) use of steroids
5) hormonal imbalance
6) use of wrong creams containing steroid for treating fungal infections.

The cause of the stretch mark or striae distensia needs to be addressed medically, whatever its cause, as eventually there is damage to the connective tissue layer of the skin which leads to scars.

Once the damage occurs, it is quite difficult to reverse with just application of creams, though some creams does give some results.

The best treatment options would be to educate young adults as it is part of the growing up teen years, and avoid drastic measures for gaining or losing weight.

It is an epidemic of sorts to overuse steroid creams nowadays. Most common use of steroids is for treating fungal issues, especially in areas where the skin is thinner and sensitive. Initially, when these appear reddish, at this stage application of creams help but once the stretch marks become whitish in colour, it is quite difficult for the skin to heal with just creams.

A combination of collagen-inducing creams with fractional lasers, micro needling radio frequency along with platelet-rich plasma rejuvenation is a good way to reduce these marks and a 40-50% reduction as an end result is usually expected.

A lot of mothers also get a bit of reduction in loose tummy skin along with reduction of these scars.

Stretch marks are a badge of honour for new mothers or a reminder for all the hard work that went through for reducing weight for others. Importantly, it is a normal part of our skin which supports the growth spurt happening in the adolescent body, though not a disease per se.

It does affect self-confidence, choice of dressing, etc for some. Whatever the plethora of responses to stretch marks, once you know the reason and seek the right choice of treatment, it can improve self- confidence and help one get back into that right-fitting dress.
